Improving Well-being

What do employees want?

If employers want to tap the reservoir of discretionary effort and energy that employees hold, they have to start with this question. The answer is that employees (and indeed all people) want to feel good. If the goals of the employer and what makes the employee feel good are aligned – motivation, high performance, happiness even, are all sustainable. If they work against each other even the best performance management process will not excite and motivate employees in a sustainable way.

When people feel good they have a sense of Psychological Well-Being (PWB). People do not achieve PWB by sitting with their feet up; it comes from striving towards difficult goals that they think are worthwhile, with the support of their manager and the organisation. It is this state of PWB, when implemented across whole organisations that can deliver measurable business benefits.
