Is Your Organisation Resilience-Ready?

Gather five UK giants of resilience at the Good Day At Work Conversation 2015 and it is a unique opportunity to ask them to share their headline tips for resilience.

In a previous life, I was a Chemistry student, a physical chemist to be precise specialising in the behaviour of atomic collisions and what happens after impact! Subsequent to that, I went into the business world, IP/data licencing and services. So when I came to Robertson Cooper, the world of HR and training, I arrived with my own ideas about Resilience from a completely different walk of life; essentially a systems view, naïve to the nuances of human behaviour.

I have subsequently had to challenge my views about resilience. Within this short article I’ve summarised the fundamental personality model used within Robertson Cooper's diagnostic and training tool i-resilience (to date +68,000 people have used it and had their own report!). The model helps illustrate the personality aspects of resilience that we can all develop, for ourselves and within our teams.

“Without my wife, I don’t think I’d be standing here. You don’t often say things like that – I don’t know why I just have – but it’s the way I feel.”

Alastair Cook, the England cricket captain, is right, we don’t often say things like that. And much less in the sporting cauldron where the theme for men, in particular, is to fight alone against the demons of pressure and self-belief. When sport stars do acknowledge the support of their families, genuine though it is, often it’s in the form of media-savvy, professional platitudes rather than emotional comment on the source of their inner strength. Cook has drawn headlines this week for his heartfelt and honest post-match summary, even overshadowing the team’s fantastic achievements – a comprehensive Test series win against India. It’s great to see such a prominent sportsman acknowledging the need for help and emotional support from others, and I hope it will be an example followed by many sports people in the future.
