After the shootings at the school in Newtown, Connecticut, there has been a surge of public opinion on the need for gun control in the US.  And although there are an increasing number of people who are advocating greater gun control in the US, the sale of guns has gone up since the shootings!  And even the advocates of greater control are talking only about reinstatement of the ban on automatic weapons rather than a complete ban on guns.

So although the appetite since the Newtown disaster is there to do something, there seems to be a psychological inhibition to banning guns altogether. The inhibition is partly due to an intrinsic feeling among many Americans that Amendments to the Constitution are sacrosanct.
